General Information

Both residents and non-residents of Westmont are encouraged to participate and are warmly welcomed at all activities and events planned for Seniors at the Westmont Park District. Wherever your interests lie, you will be sure to find something to please you. Age is a state of mind! Come on out and discover for yourself what is available. Perhaps this is the year you will try square dancing, or join our bowling league. We do the planning; you bring us your sense of adventure and a little spare time. Now is your time to enjoy yourself-and meet some new friends too.

The Senior Center

LOCATION: 55 East Richmond Street (the old Westmont Library) You can enter either on Richmond or Linden. There are 6 stairs to the lower level and 10 stairs going to the upper level. There is an elevator when you enter on Linden Street.

LOWER LEVEL - Dining area, lounge with T.V., stereo, blood pressure machine, tables for cards, games, etc... Upper Level - All Sr. Services (Legal Service, S.H.I.P., etc..) plus Dancercise, Line Dance, and Senior Chorus.

TIMES: The Senior Center is open from 8:30 am-4:30 pm Monday through Friday.

PHONE: Senior Line - Senior activities information, appointments for services, general information - 969-8080 Alice ext. 104 or Linda ext.121.  If no one is there to answer the phone, you will be switched to an automated message! Nutrition line - to make reservations for lunch - 963-0308.

REGISTRATION: All registration takes place at the Community Center, 75 East Richmond.

BUS TRIPS: Will leave from in front of the Community Center-75 East Richmond.

PARKING: The East side of Linden Street, or the East or West sides of the Community Center at 75 East Richmond. You are asked to park on the West side of the Community Center when you attend a day trip.

"Young At Heart News", the Senior newsletter, issued three times a year, gives you current information on trips, special events, services and programs. To cover mailing costs residents are charged $3/year, non-residents pay $6 a year.Newsletters can be picked up free of charge at the community center or senior center. Subscriptions run from January to January. "Young At Heart News" click here to download and print our most recent edition of the newsletter.

Senior Programs

Classes

Currently on the agenda is Dancercise and Line dancing, Water color and Tai Chi. These classes are offered by the College of DuPage with reduced fees for Seniors.

Senior Chorus

All you need is a love of music- the chorus meets Tuesdays from 1-2 pm. There is no fee for this program, so come join the fun.

Rules of the Road- March 19

Held every other month, this refresher class will help prepare you to take your driver's exam. Next class will be September 18 at at 9:30 am.

Golf Leagues

Plays at Twin Lakes, our 9-hole course. League plays April-September 2008.  Call 969-8080 ext.104 for more information.

In-Center Activities

Our Center is very lively; activities are generally free of charge. They include informational and educational speakers, travel slide show presentations, special occasion parties, monthly birthday parties, movies, cards, and book reviews.

Travel Opportunities

During the year, extended trips to interesting locations are planned with the assistance of local established Senior tour agencies. The trips may be anywhere from 2-21 days in length; the advantage is that you can travel with friends from the Westmont area. Slide presentations are shown at the Center preceding each trip and opportunity for questions is given at that time.

Bowling League at Suburbanite Bowl

Bowls at Suburbanite Bowl League plays September 7-May 3, 2007.

Day Excursions

These excursions are offered approximately six times each month, using a chartered bus or our 24 passenger van. We go on tours, attend luncheon/theatre matinees, try out new restaurants and generally visit places of interest in the Chicagoland area. Cost of each trip is carefully computed to cover admission, meal, gratuity, tax and transportation.

Financial Planning Information

A registered financial planner will be at the Center every month.   He will be available to answer your questions concerning investments, tax savings, insurance, CD's and general financial planning.  This is a private, one-on-one service, and is free of charge.  An appointment is necessary.

Pedicures

Offered the first & third Thursday from 9:30am-12:30 pm, you must make an appointment by calling Alice at 969-8080 ext. 104. The fee is $15/half hour appointment. Expert foot care: toenails, calluses, etc.

Health Insurance Assistance

Sponsored by the Illinois Department of Insurance, a trained volunteer will be at the Center from 10 am-12 noon on the first Thursday of each month. He will be available to answer basic health insurance questions and help you decide what kinds of benefits and amounts of insurance coverage you should have. You must call for an appointment; 969-8080 ext.104.

Legal Service- January 23 & March 27

This is available every other month at the Center through Prairie State Legal Service. You must be a DuPage County resident, at least 60 years of age. Assistance for legal problems, excluding wills and those cases which have been previously handled by an attorney is offered. An appointment must be made. This service is free. Call 690-2130. Next dates are January 23 & March 27 from 1:30-3:30pm.

Nutrition Program

Monday through Friday at 11:30 am, catered nutritious meals are served through the sponsorship of the DuPage Senior Citizens Council. Reservations are necessary. Meals for homebound Seniors can be arranged; special diets are also available. Always needed are volunteer drivers to deliver homebound meals in Westmont; call 963-0308 for information.
